5 Signs Your Garage Door Needs Professional Repair

Your garage door is one of the most-used mechanical systems in your home — opening and closing an average of 1,500 times a year. Like any mechanical system, wear is inevitable. The key is catching small problems before they become expensive ones.

Here are five signs you should call a professional instead of waiting.

1. The Door Is Slow or Moves Unevenly

A properly functioning garage door should open and close smoothly in about 12–15 seconds. If yours is noticeably sluggish, jerks mid-travel, or pauses on one side, the cables or springs are likely out of balance. Running an unbalanced door strains the opener motor and can cause the cables to snap unexpectedly.

2. You Hear Grinding, Scraping, or Loud Banging

Some sound is normal — rollers on a track, the motor cycling. But grinding or scraping usually means metal-on-metal contact from worn rollers, a bent track, or a broken spring. A loud bang (especially one you hear from inside the house) often means a torsion spring has snapped. Both situations need immediate attention.

3. The Door Doesn’t Sit Level When Closed

Stand inside your garage and look at the bottom of the door. A gap on one side — or a door that bows in the middle — means the tension is uneven. This not only creates a security gap, it puts asymmetric load on the opener and track hardware every time the door cycles.

4. The Opener Runs But the Door Doesn’t Move

If you can hear the motor run but the door stays put, the most likely cause is a broken spring. The opener isn’t designed to lift the full dead weight of the door — the springs do most of that work. Running the opener without functioning springs will burn out the motor quickly.

5. Visible Rust, Cracks, or Bent Sections

Rust weakens steel panels and accelerates corrosion of the track and hardware. A bent section causes binding every cycle, which compounds into alignment problems over time. Minor surface rust can often be treated; deep rust or a badly bent panel usually warrants panel replacement before the damage spreads.
