The signs of a broken spring

Springs are the hardest-working part of any garage door, and they're usually the first thing to fail. The classic sign is a loud bang from the garage, often mistaken for something falling. After that, the door won't open, or the opener strains and lifts it only a few inches before stopping.

Other tells: the door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it by hand, it drops quickly instead of moving smoothly, or you can see a visible gap in the tightly wound coil above the door. If you notice any of these, the safest move is to stop using the door until it's been looked at.

Torsion and extension springs, and what replacement involves

Garage doors use one of two spring systems. Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door and are the more common, longer-lasting design. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side. Both do the same job: they counterbalance the weight of the door so it can be raised and lowered with minimal effort.

Replacing them is precise work. The right spring has to be matched to the door's weight, height, and travel, then wound to the correct tension and the door balanced so its weight rests on the springs rather than the opener. When springs come in a matched pair, replacing both at once is usually the sensible call, since a spring that's near failure is rarely far behind its twin.

Why spring work should never be DIY

This is the repair we most strongly urge people not to attempt themselves. A garage door spring stores hundreds of pounds of tension, and it releases that energy instantly if it slips or is handled wrong. Winding bars that kick back, springs that let go under load — these cause broken bones, deep lacerations, and worse every year.
