How to Choose the Right Garage Door Opener

The garage door opener market is crowded with options and marketing jargon. This guide cuts through the noise and focuses on what actually matters for a typical Central Valley home.

Drive Type: Chain, Belt, or Wall-Mount?

Chain drive openers are the most affordable and the most common. They use a metal chain to pull the trolley along the rail. They’re durable and work well for most doors, but they’re noticeably louder than the alternatives — something to consider if there’s a bedroom above or adjacent to the garage.

Belt drive openers replace the chain with a rubber belt. They operate near-silently, which makes them the right choice for attached garages next to living spaces. Expect to pay $50–$100 more for the same opener in belt-drive form.

Wall-mount (jackshaft) openers mount beside the door rather than on the ceiling. They free up overhead space (useful for high-lift or custom door setups), run quietly, and are a good fit for garages with low ceilings or attic storage above the door. They cost more up front and require specific door configurations to work properly.

Horsepower: How Much Do You Need?

For a standard single-car door (up to 8 feet wide, under 200 lbs): ½ HP is sufficient.

For a double-car or heavy wood door: ¾ HP or 1 HP is a better choice. The motor doesn’t work as hard at the top of its range, which means longer life and smoother operation.

WiFi and Smart Features

Most name-brand openers sold today include built-in WiFi. The practical benefit: you get real-time open/close alerts on your phone and can operate the door remotely. If you’ve ever driven away wondering whether you left it open, this feature alone is worth it.

LiftMaster’s myQ system and similar platforms from Chamberlain and Genie integrate with Amazon Key, Google Home, and Apple Home. If you’re building out a smart home, check compatibility before you buy.

Battery Backup

Fresno summers bring occasional power outages. An opener with battery backup keeps the door operational even when the power is out — important if your car is in the garage and you need to get somewhere. Not every model includes this; it’s worth checking before purchase.

What We Recommend

For most attached garages in the Central Valley, we typically install LiftMaster belt-drive ¾ HP openers with WiFi and battery backup. They’re quiet, durable, and supported by a strong dealer network for parts and warranty service. For detached garages where noise isn’t a concern, a chain-drive ½ HP unit gets the job done reliably at a lower price point.
